Morell’s Source of Drugs

How and from whom did Morell replenish his drug stores? The Morell microfilms establish that until the assassination attempt of July 20, 1944, drugs came to Führer Hauptquartier through a single pharmacy, the Engle Apotheke in Berlin. Both of the pharmacists who worked through that period were deceased when I tried to contact them and all business records were destroyed during the battles in and over Berlin. However, the widow of one of the pharmacists put me in contact with a woman who had worked in the Engle Apotheke as a clerk and janitor. This woman remembered regular deliveries from the apotheke to Führer Hauptquartier but could not remember specific drugs. She was, however, quite sure that none of the drugs involved was compounded into its final form in the apotheke. That was rarely done for any customer so it is unlikely that methamphetamine was added to Vitamultin at the pharmacy. Dead end.

However, Morell’s correspondence points toward a likely solution of the supply problem. Letters show that the pharmacy received Vitamultin directly from the Hamma factory. If methamphetamine was added to the vitamin preparation it must have been done at that factory. Evidence supports this interpretation. Morell owned Hamma and so had control over its employees and its operation. One of those employees was Dr. Kurt Mulli, a physician and Hamma’s chief chemist. Morell and Mulli were much more to one another than employer and employee. They were intimate friends, as was demonstrated on several occasions, most clearly when late in the war Morell gave Mulli written authority to take charge of his financial affairs in the event of his death or incapacity.13 The Morell microfilms establish that Mulli personally made up a “special” preparation of Vitamultin in his own home. To do this he had to have permissions from local officials. In July 1941, Mulli’s request for this permission, endorsed by Morell, went to the Gaulieter (district governor) of the Hamburg area.14 Permission was requested to produce “Vitamultin F and other special preparations for the Reichchancellery” in Mulli’s home.15 Permission was granted.

Of course, I wanted to interview Dr. Mulli and wrote letters to him that were not answered. Dr. Mulli died in April, 1977 one week before I arrived at his doorstep unannounced. The doorbell was answered by one of his sons who was most friendly and forthcoming. He assured me that his mother, also a physician, would be happy to cooperate with me after a period for mourning had passed. In 1978 I tried to contact Dr. Mulli’s widow but, despite her son’s assurances, she proved uncooperative. I also sent her parts of this book pertaining to Dr. Mulli and asked her to comment. I received no reply. Excepting one woman who was ill, the Mulli’s were the only people to whom I wrote who would not see me. They were also the only people who did not answer letters.

The evidence suggests that Dr. Mulli added methamphetamine to Vitamultin in his home laboratory, shipped it to the Engle Apoteke, which then sent it on to Morell at Wehrmacht headquarters.
